MAC makeup artists translate the trends for IRLWhat 'love heart lips', 'gym skin' and the 'invisible eye line' mean for your makeup?

In the midst of this Fashion Month, we caught up with three leading makeup artists when they weren't setting the trends backstage at the shows. While the catwalk looks will doubtlessly trickle down, making their way via new product collections and onto our faces, sometimes the trends need translating before they work on real gals. MAC Director of Makeup Artistry Terry Barber and Senior Artists Cher Webb and Rachel O'Donnell explain how to make them wearable.

There's an on-going movement for skin to look like skin – and not a mask of makeup. If your complexion isn't perfect, don't worry. Full-coverage foundation CAN look natural. The rule? Don't overdo it.

Terry: "Full coverage used to look like full coverage, but not now technology has changed."

Rachel: "Coverage now doesn't need to be a mask. Try the MAC Pro Longwear foundation. It's a really nice one for someone who does need a bit more coverage. It's got a kind of movability to it, it moves like real skin."

Cher: "If you do have more covered skin, then don't have a smoky eye, bold brows or a red lip... That way the skin doesn't look as heavy because you haven't got everything else on, too."

A counter-contouring vibe has been brewing for the last few seasons, with the idea being that we need to move away from 'Kontouring' and give our faces structure with radiance, instead.

Terry: "We still contour, but what we're trying to do as makeup artists is make everything invisible and seamless."

Rachel: "There's a big difference between looking at someone and saying 'wow, I really like your contour' or 'wow, you've got amazing cheekbones'."

Cher: "It's about highlighting and leaving the cheekbones to shine, like a natural contour. Always highlight!"

Terry: "Yes, work more with radiance. MAC's Studio Quick Trick Sticks (double-ended highlight and contour sticks, being trialled backstage at the moment) gives you 'gym skin'. Like you've just come out a spa, so instead of the 3D strobing thing, it looks kind of real. Like Giselle on the beach."

Want to keep your lippy game up to date? Forget 'over-lining' and play with statement shapes this season.
